For the first time, the University of Kentucky is offering a bachelor’s degree in sport leadership.
The Bachelor of Arts in Sport Leadership is based in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion in the University of Kentucky College of Education and offers three tracks, two in collaboration with the College of Communication and Information.

While working in his home country of Nigeria at the University of Ibadan, it became clear to Olumuyiwa “Moses” Desmennu that pursuing a Ph.D. would be essential for his professional advancement and personal fulfillment.
Last week, he celebrated completion of that goal as he walked across the University of Kentucky commencement stage to accept his Ph.D. in Education Sciences, but his path from Nigeria to Kentucky was a much longer journey.
For nearly a decade, students taking a University of Kentucky sport leadership course have been discovering that a class assignment can be more than a chance to develop new skills. It can also be a way to give back.
Graduate students in the UK College of Education [education.uky/khp]Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion course KHP 685, “Supervision of Sport and Fitness Personnel,” take part in the “Good Deeds Project.” The annual assignment is designed to connect a community engagement element to functions of a supervisor.
For elementary education and special education majors, "unit day" is a culminating hands-on activity for the practicum semester. During unit day, pre-service teachers show off the skills they have gained in designing and teaching an interdisciplinary unit of instruction in area elementary schools.
Unit Day took place at the end of the fall 2023 semester at Breckinridge Elementary and Cassidy Elementary.
Congratulations to Eric Thomas Weber, Ph.D., and Kayla Johnson, Ph.D., faculty members in the UK College of Education Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation. They are among six UK faculty members receiving a 2024 Great Teacher Award. The UK Alumni Association surprised them during a college meeting in December. The Great Teacher Award is the oldest continuously presented award to recognize teachers at UK.
