What can you do with this degree?

In just one calendar year, you’ll complete both a Master’s degree and a secondary teaching certification. You’ll complete the program prepared to teach English, journalism, speech, theater, and humanities to students in grades 8–12.

What You'll Study

  • 31 credit hours across 3 semesters
    • Most students complete program in a summer-fall-spring sequence
  • Summer semester
    • 9 credit hours (electives)
  • Fall semester
    • 11 credit hours (required courses)
      • 200 hours of practicum hours in local high school English classrooms (placements provided by program)
  • Spring semester
    • 11 credit hours (required courses)
      • 70 days of student teaching in area high school English classroom (placement provided by program)
      • Alternatively, the program can be completed in a fall-spring-summer sequence

During the spring semester, students will complete a master’s exam project and oral defense with program faculty. 

Note: To obtain teaching licensure, students are required to complete certification paperwork and receive passing scores on the Praxis “English Language Arts: Content & Analysis (5038)” and “Principles of Learning and Teaching (5624)” exams.

What do we look for in applicants?

  • An undergraduate degree in English, English Education, or its equivalent
    • We also work with candidates from other backgrounds, so if you’re interested, please contact us to discuss your qualifications.
  • A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or greater
  • GPA of 2.75 or greater in major, minor, and support courses
  • A love for reading and writing
  • A desire to help adolescents participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of literacy communities
  • Thoughtfulness about language, literacy, personal life experiences, schools, and teaching
