Building Special Education and Behavior Analytic Connections for Students with High-Intensity Needs

The BEACON Project at the University of Kentucky prepares master’s-level professionals to support students with high-intensity needs, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavioral disorders. BEACON Scholars gain interdisciplinary training across Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MSD), Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD), and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) programs.

Program Benefits:

  • Financial stipend covering in-state tuition, fees, and textbooks each semester — with additional funds available for childcare, transportation, etc.
  • Hands-on training in schools.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration across MSD, LBD, and ABA teams.
  • Leadership development and mentoring opportunities.
  • Flexible course delivery: MSD and LBD offered in person or via Zoom; ABA completed in person.

Who Should Apply: Ideal candidates are passionate about improving outcomes for students with disabilities and committed to evidence-based, collaborative practices. Applicants should seek initial certification in MSD, LBD, or BCBA eligibility through ABA and be motivated to serve in high-needs schools.

Deadlines:

  • January 15 — Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
  • May 15 — Special Education (MSD and LBD)
