Guatemala

Students participating on this program will spend 11 days working in a children’s home and preschool in Guatemala City. Students will work together to implement the Global Guidelines Assessment (ACEI) to examine the quality of the children’s home and preschool. Based on the results, students will provide training to caregivers and preschool staff on ways to improve the quality of their programs. Students will also visit educational programs throughout Guatemala City and draw conclusions about the differences between education in the United States and Guatemala.

In addition, students will assess children, with and without disabilities, who attend the preschool and live at the children’s home to determine their developmental strength and needs. Once the assessment is completed, students identify prioritized goals and design learning activities for children based on assessment data. Finally, they will meet with caregivers to provide suggestions for how to promote the children’s development within the context of preschool and home routines and activities.

South Africa

Predeparture meetings will cover the historical context, culture of the Zulu region of South Africa, and the education system there (kindergarten, special education). While in South Africa, students will work in three kindergartens in the Ulundi region of Zululand. There they will implement developmentally appropriate activities and assist with teacher training. In addition, students will participate in a variety of cultural experiences including the Apartheid Museum, various Zululand museums/sites, and Thula Thula Game Reserve and Safari. This program is being co-sponsored by The Heart that Gives Foundation and participating students will receipt partial support to offset the cost of the experience.
