Before students are eligible to apply to the Teacher Education Program (TEP), students are required to:
- Complete prerequisite courses
- Students should consult with their academic advisor on prerequisite courses required for their specific program
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- OR 3.000 GPA over their last 30 credit hours
- Take ACT and PRAXIS Core
- Scores needed for TEP Admission:
- ACT Composite- 22 OR
- ACT: Reading-20, Writing- 18, Mathematics- 19 OR
- PRAXIS Core: Reading-150, Writing- 158, Mathematics- 144 OR
- PRAXIS Core with a 3.000 UK Cumulative GPA: Reading-145, Writing- 153, Mathematics- 139
- UK (code #1837) and the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board KY EPSB (code#7283) should both be listed as score recipients when students register for Praxis Exams. ETS charges a fee to send the scores if the score recipients are not listed at the time of registration.
- Scores needed for TEP Admission:
- Gain Experience
- Students are encouraged to find opportunities that will allow them to gain valuable experience to build their resume for the application to the Teacher Education Program.
- Classroom Observation & School-Based Volunteering: Experiences such as observing teachers, assisting in P–12 classrooms, helping with small-group instruction, or supporting after-school programs.
- Tutoring & Academic Support: Providing one-on-one or group tutoring, peer tutoring, mentoring, or assisting with literacy or math intervention programs.
- Youth Programs & Community Engagement: Working with youth through organizations like YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, 4-H, Scouts, or serving as a camp counselor or youth group leader.
- Early Childhood & Childcare Experience: Working or volunteering in preschools, child development centers, daycare settings, or early learning programs.
- Diverse Learner & Inclusive Education Experience: Supporting multilingual learners, students with disabilities, or programs serving culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
- Leadership & Service-Learning Roles: Holding leadership positions, participating in service-learning courses, or engaging in community-based projects that build communication, teamwork, and professional skills.
- Classroom Observation & School-Based Volunteering: Experiences such as observing teachers, assisting in P–12 classrooms, helping with small-group instruction, or supporting after-school programs.
