The University of Kentucky’s Teacher Education Program (TEP) prepares future educators through a structured, standards-based pathway designed to ensure students are ready to teach effectively in today’s classrooms. Grounded in a commitment to excellence, quality, and continuous improvement, TEP provides students with clear benchmarks from their first education courses through full professional certification in the state of Kentucky.

The Teacher Education Program operates in alignment with all Kentucky Teacher Performance Standards (KTPS) and applicable state and federal requirements. Throughout each stage of the program—Pre-TEP, Applying to TEP, Admitted to TEP, and Applying for Certification—students complete developmental milestones that ensure they meet Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) regulations for admission, field experiences, student teaching, assessments, and eventual recommendation for teacher certification by the EPSB.

These four steps are designed to ensure that all students progress through the program with a clear understanding of expectations, requirements, and professional responsibilities.

TEP Steps

Step 1: Pre-TEP

The pre-TEP stage helps students build a strong foundation before entering the Teacher Education Program (TEP). This phase includes completing prerequisite coursework, meeting initial GPA and testing requirements, and gaining early classroom exposure. Pre-TEP prepares students for formal admission into the program.

STEP 2: Applying to TEP

When ready to apply to TEP, students will complete the TEP application process. This includes having a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, submitting passing test scores and letters of recommendation, completing the character and fitness review, and meeting any additional requirements specific to their program. These EPSB mandated requirements ensure that candidates are prepared for upper-level professional coursework.

STEP 3: Admitted to TEP

Once admitted into TEP, students will begin professional education coursework and required field experiences that meet KTPS standards. Students develop core teaching skills, maintain academic progress, and apply for student teaching during this stage.
