Course instructors at UK may request to have their students observe and complete course assignment in the ECL’s toddler and preschool classrooms. If needing students to observe in the infant classrooms, please contact Dr. Collin Shepley (collinshepley@uky.edu) as there are additional requirements that must be satisfied per licensing regulations. Course instructors may submit a request to use the ECL as an observation site using the following link: ECL Observation Form Request. Expect a response within 1 week. Direct all questions to Dr. Collin Shepley (collinshepley@uky.edu). Please note that students should not submit a request to observe at the ECL. Any student observing at the ECL must do so in conjunction with an approved course; thus, it is the responsibility of the course instructor to submit an observation request.

All students completing observations at the ECL must have a Child Abuse/Neglect background check on file with the ECL prior to beginning their observations. A student must complete and pass the background check prior to beginning their observations. Once a course is approved for observation at the ECL, students may schedule a background check (see below).

Background Check

UK students (and researchers or volunteers) conducting observations, completing course assignments, or interacting with children at the ECL, are required to have completed and passed a Child Abuse/Neglect (CAN) background check prior to beginning any observations at the ECL. If a UK student already has a CAN background check on file with the ECL, then they may begin their observations. If a UK student has worked in child care or after school care and completed a CAN background check for that position, then they may send a copy of the document to the ECL. If a UK student completed a CAN background check for Fayette County Schools, then they may send a copy of the document to the ECL.

If a student does not have a CAN background check on file with the ECL, they will need to come to the ECL to complete the check. Please send an email to Kathy Hughes (kmrile0@uky.edu) or call the ECL at 859-257-7732 to schedule an appointment to complete a CAN background check which should take about 10-15 minutes. In the email, please indicate your availability between 9:00am and 3:00pm on Mondays through Fridays.

The following information and documentation will be needed to complete the CAN background check: home address, current address in Lexington, social security number, and one of the following forms of identification: Driver's License/State ID, Birth Certificate, Social Security Card/Individual Taxpayer ID, Passport or work ID. The CAN background check costs $10 and can be paid online by credit card or debit card at your appointment. If needing to pay by cash or check, please let Kathy Hughes know when scheduling. CAN background checks are generally processed within 48 hours.
