The ECL follows constructivist theory – children build knowledge based on interactions with their environment, and interactions with others. We provide a developmentally appropriate environment for children and provide adult support to enhance learning. Curriculum for young children at the Early Childhood Laboratory is linked to the Kentucky Early Childhood Standards. The Early Childhood Standards provide a framework for children’s development from birth to age four. Our daily curriculum focuses on individual and family goals and child interest.

The ECL offers a blended program, whereby children with and without disabilities may be enrolled in each of the laboratory classes. Modifications and adaptations to the learning environment are made as needed and as stated in a child’s IFSP, IEP, assessment information, or with input from the parents and teachers.

Curriculum

All ECL classrooms utilize the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System (3rd Ed.) to determine children’s developmental strengths and areas for growth. Results from this assessment are shared with families twice a year. These results help teachers align learning experiences and classroom activities with the needs of the children they serve. Teachers will develop lesson plans and share these plans with families on a weekly basis.

Classrooms

The ECL serves children across 5 classrooms; though classrooms may be combined during summer months when enrollment is lower. A breakdown of the current classroom and ratios is provided below:
