The Undergraduate Certificate in Globally Competent Teaching prepares educators to meet the needs of diverse students and teach collaboration across cultures. As classrooms become more diverse, this certificate equips you to incorporate global issues, diverse perspectives, and intercultural learning into your teaching, ensuring you can effectively engage a wide range of learners.

Certificate Requirements

The Undergraduate Certificate in Globally Competent Teaching requires 15 credit hours as follows:

Required Courses (choose 3 credit hours from the following)

  • EDC 454G or EPE 454G: Culture, Education and Teaching Abroad (3)

Guided Electives (choose 6 credit hours from the following)

  • EDC 310: Globally Minded Teaching and Learning (3)
  • EDC 315: Intercultural and Global Learning (3)
  • EDS 599: Education Abroad in Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counseling Education (1-6)
  • EPE 555: Comparative Education (3)
  • AAS 550 or EDC 550: Education in a Culturally Diverse Society (3)

Electives (choose 3 credit hours from the following)

  • CLD 380 or SOC 380: Globalization: A Cross-Cultural Perspective (3)
  • INT 200: Introduction to International Studies (3)
  • COM 249: Mass Media and Mass Culture (3)
  • MCL 200: Reading the World (3)
  • MCL 300 or SPA 300: Contact Zones: Cultivating Intercultural Competence (3)
  • EDC 560 or TSL 560: Literacy Development in the ESL Classroom (3)

How to Apply

Incoming Students: Minors and certificates can be declared once you are an enrolled student at the University.  

Current students: To add a minor or certificate, follow these instructions: 

  • Log on to your myUKGPS
  • Under “My Program of Study” on the right side of the page, click the link “Request a major/minor/certificate change”.  
  • This will allow you to add, change, or remove any major or minor.
