Keep Track of Deadlines
The MIC follows a Fall to Spring track of coursework. However, MIC students may begin certain coursework (i.e., electives) in the Spring or Summer.
- Spring Admission: contact content area program chair
- Summer/Fall Admission: February 15*
- Interviews for Summer/Fall admissions take place in March or April.
- Funding: February 1 (funding would begin the following Fall semester)
*As the MIC has a “rolling deadline,” please contact the content area program chair for additional information concerning application dates.
Applicants are notified of decision as soon as possible. UK seniors who wish to participate in the 6+6 Program (Graduating Seniors as Part Time Graduate Students) must apply to the MIC program prior to the spring course registration window.
The program is competitive, so it is important to keep your GPA up and score well on your GRE. If you have questions or problems when applying for the MIC program, please contact Betty McCann or your content area program chair.
MIC students may begin coursework in Spring, Summer, or Fall.
Complete the Applications
You must be admitted by the UK Graduate School before the College of Education can formally admit you to the MIC Program. Although you apply to both the Graduate School and the MIC through the same application, these are two separate admissions processes. Please review procedures for Graduate School admission and consult with the Graduate School Office of Admissions regarding your status with them.
1. About You/Applicants in the U.S.
These sections request demographic information. Please provide all required information and confirm its accuracy, especially your email and mailing addresses.
2. Plan of Study
Applicants often complete this section incorrectly, so please read carefully.
- Under “Admissions Category” please select “Master’s Degree.” Do NOT select “Teacher Certification.” If you are an undergraduate participating in the 6+6 program, you should select “Graduating Senior as Part-Time Graduate Student” instead of “Master’s Degree.”
- Under “Program” please select “Curriculum and Instruction – Secondary Education“
- Under “Intended Start Date” please select the semester during which you intend to begin coursework. Please remember that the MIC program requires students to complete 9 hours of elective credits. In order to complete these in time for a May graduation date, program chairs highly recommend that you begin coursework during the summer, which allows you to complete the majority, if not all, of your elective coursework before required coursework begins in the fall. Think carefully before selecting. If you do not take courses during the semester for which you have applied, or if you do not qualify for admission to the semester for which you have applied, you are responsible for updating your Graduate School admission status to the semester in which you begin classes. The Graduate School may assess a fee each time you request an application update.

3. College Information
This section requests information regarding previous undergraduate and graduate work.
A Note About Transcripts:
- Proof of UK coursework may be documented by a copy of your unofficial transcript (accessed through myUK).
- Proof of coursework completed at other institutions, even if you did not receive a degree, must be documented by an official transcript (a copy is acceptable).
4. Test Scores
This section requests information regarding standardized test scores.
The Graduate School application requires all applicants to submit General GRE scores. You will need to send these scores to the UK Graduate School (Institution Code is 1837). To register for a test, go to: www.ets.org.
Although the Graduate School does not require a minimum GRE score, the Education Professional Standards Board does. The minimum GRE scores for admission to the MIC program are 150 (verbal), 143 (quantitative), and 4.0 (analytical)
If you do not meet one or more of the minimum GRE scores, you may choose to take equivalent portions of the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills Test instead of retaking the GRE. The minimum PRAXIS scores for admission to the MIC are 156 (Reading), 150 (Math), and 162 (Writing). If you have already taken the PRAXIS, please upload a copy of your scores under “additional information.”
Please upload the following materials, ensuring that they meet the criteria provided below:
- Personal Statement — Please provide a brief description of your formal experience(s) working with adolescents (e.g., classroom observations, camp counselor, tutoring). The description should include the context (time and place) as well as in what capacity you worked with the adolescents. It should also include a discussion of how you anticipate this experience(s) will influence you as you move through the MIC program and into your own classroom.
- Writing Sample — Please provide a writing sample of no more than 10 pages that illustrates critical thinking and analysis. This writing sample should be related to the discipline (e.g. social studies, science) in which you are seeking to enroll in the MIC program.
Note: Do not upload files under the “Assistantship Application” or “Portfolio” portions.
6. Additional MIC Materials
Character and Fitness Form – Please read these questions carefully, answer all the questions, and provide any necessary documentation. It is very important that you sign and date this form.
Code of Ethics – Please follow the provided link and read this document carefully. You may choose to print and retain a copy for future reference.
GPA CalculatorDirections for Completing the GPA Calculator Form
Beyond a cumulative GPA of 2.75, candidates for the MIC program must also have a 2.75 GPA in their major, minor, and support courses. To complete these tasks, please download the GPA Calculator Form and follow the directions outlined below.
Major Courses: Using the provided form, calculate the GPA for courses taken to fulfill requirements for your major. If you completed more than one major, please fill out a separate form for each. Title your form LASTNAME_MAJORGPA (e.g., MUELLER_MAJORGPA) before uploading it to your application. If completing more than one form, add a number to the end (e.g., LASTNAME_MAJORGPA1, LASTNAME_MAJORGPA2).
Minor Courses: If applicable, use the provided form to calculate the GPA for courses taken to fulfill requirements for your minor. If you completed more than one minor, please fill out a separate form for each. Title your form LASTNAME_MINORGPA (e.g., MUELLER_MINORGPA) before uploading it to your application. If completing more than one form, add a number to the end (e.g., LASTNAME_MINORGPA1, LASTNAME_MINORGPA2).
• English Candidates: The English Education Support Area consists of a total of 18 hours of journalism, speech, theater, and fine arts. Candidates must complete at least one course in each area and at least three courses in one area. Using the provided form, calculate the GPA for these support area courses. Title your form LASTNAME_SUPPORTGPA (e.g., MUELLER_SUPPORTGPA) before uploading it to your application. If you have significant life or career experience in any of the areas, you may work with the English Education advisor to document some of this experience in lieu of coursework.
• Math Candidates: All candidates are required to have completed at least 30 hours of mathematics (the equivalent of a mathematics undergraduate degree). There are some essential courses that include (but are not limited to): Calc II (MA114), Calc III (MA213), Matrix/Linear Algebra (MA322), Number Theory (MA261), and Topics in Geometry (MA341) or some other 300+ level Geometry course. Calc IV (MA214) should also be considered if there is interest in teaching advanced calculus classes. Other mathematics courses could be considered as well, so please work with the MIC Mathematics advisor if there are questions. Use the provided form to calculate the GPA for these courses. Title your form LASTNAME_SUPPORTGPA (e.g., MUELLER_SUPPORTGPA) before uploading it to your application. PLEASE NOTE: Candidates who majored in math do NOT need to complete this form. Candidates who minored in math should list additional math courses beyond those required for their minor on this form. Candidates who neither majored nor minored in math should list all math courses on this form.
• Science Candidates: Supporting courses for various science degrees are those math and science courses that aren’t part of the major discipline but are required to support understanding in that discipline. For instance, biology majors are often required to take General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I & II, Physics I, Calculus I, and Statistics as supporting courses. Use the provided form to calculate the GPA for these support area courses. Title your form LASTNAME_SUPPORTGPA (e.g., MUELLER_SUPPORTGPA) before uploading it to your application. If there are questions about what the supporting courses are for your major, please locate the program of study for it online.
• Social Studies Candidates: The Social Studies Education Support Area consists of coursework in the following disciplines – anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, and sociology. Omitting courses taken to fulfill a major or minor, use the provided form to calculate the GPA for these support area courses. Title your form LASTNAME_SUPPORTGPA (e.g., MUELLER_SUPPORTGPA) before uploading it to your application.

Letters of Recommendation
You are required to submit three recommendations. Recommendations should come from the following sources:
- College instructor, preferably in your content area of specialization, who is familiar with your ability. This source is required.
- Former or present employer.
- Individual who has supervised you in an activity dealing with adolescents.
- Academic advisor who is familiar with your ability.
No more than two recommendations are to come from any one of the above sources.
The $65.00 Graduate School application fee is paid online.
You must bring the $30.00 MIC application fee to Betty McCann (305 Dickey Hall). Make checks out to “University of Kentucky”.
