The spire of the Taylor Education Building against a cloudy sky

Registration is open for the Martha McCarthy Forum on Policy in Practice, hosted by the University of Kentucky College of Education. This year’s theme, Kentucky’s Changing Assessment and Accountability Landscape, will bring together leaders who have helped shape, study and implement education policy in Kentucky to examine where the Commonwealth has been, what is changing now and what can be learned as policy moves into practice.

The virtual conversation will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. ET Monday, Nov. 2, on Zoom.

Speakers will include:

  • Brigitte Blom (moderator), president and CEO, Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence
  • Robbie Fletcher, Ed.D., Kentucky commissioner of education
  • Regina “Gina” Umpstead Pratel, J.D., Ph.D., professor of educational administration and leadership, University of Louisville
  • Gene Wilhoit, former Kentucky commissioner of education
  • Lu Young, Ed.D., chair, Kentucky Board of Education, and clinical professor, University of Kentucky

“This forum is an opportunity to better understand Kentucky’s assessment and accountability system, including its history, its purpose and the changes now underway as a result of HB 257,” said Beth Rous, Ed.D., professor and chair, UK College of Education Department of Educational Leadership Studies. “By bringing people together with a range of experience and perspectives, we hope to provide helpful context around what is changing, the questions that remain and what implementation may look like for districts, schools, educators, students and communities.”

The Martha McCarthy Forum on Policy in Practice is an annual UK College of Education event that brings together educators, scholars, policymakers, legal experts and other stakeholders to examine what happens as education policy moves from enactment into practice and what emerging experience and evidence mean for Kentucky. The forum is supported by an annual gift to the UK College of Education from Martha McCarthy, Ph.D., a two-time UK College of Education graduate whose distinguished career has made her a leading scholar in education law, policy and educational leadership.
