What can you do with this certificate?

A health and wellness coaching certificate enables students to guide individuals or groups toward sustainable lifestyle changes through motivational interviewing and other evidence-based practices. Students build skills in active listening, empathy, goal setting, and behavior change to help clients improve areas such as nutrition, physical activity, stress, and sleep. Health and wellness coaches can launch private coaching practices, work in corporate wellness, partner with clinics or gym networks, work with insurance companies, and more.

Certificate Requirements

The Undergraduate Certificate in Health and Wellness Coaching requires 12 credit hours as follows:

Required Courses

  • KHP 487: Building Healthy Habits: A Coaching Framework for Behavior Change (3) (offered every spring semester)
  • KHP 591: Health and Wellness Coaching (3) (offered every fall semester)
  • KHP 489: Health Coaching Internship (3)

Electives (choose 3 credit hours from the following)

The course chosen with guidance from your academic advisor, should support the goals and interests of the student, while aligning with health promotion, behavior change, and/or health and wellness:

  • SOC 340: Community Interaction (3)
  • SOC 355: Society of Health and Illness (3)
  • DHN 210: Human Nutrition and Wellness (3)
  • CLM 323: Social Determinants of Health (3)
  • NUR 518: Love Yourself – Introduction to Mindfulness and Wellness (3)
  • CED 410: Helping Skills for Community Settings (3)

How to Apply

Incoming Students: Minors and certificates can be declared once you are an enrolled student at the University.   

Current students: To add a minor or certificate, follow these instructions: 

  • Log on to your myUKGPS
  • Under “My Program of Study” on the right side of the page, click the link “Request a major/minor/certificate change”.  
  • This will allow you to add, change, or remove any major or minor.
