Welcome to the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation!

Greetings and welcome to the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation (EPE).  The primary focus of the department is upon analyzing and understanding issues of educational policy in their social, historical and philosophical contexts. We attempt to provide a unique opportunity for those wishing to pursue such knowledge.  We offer coursework and research experiences that deal with exploring and understanding origins, dynamics and solutions to social issues involved with schooling, both nationally and internationally.

The Department offers three broad areas of concentration: Historical and Socio-Cultural Study of Education provides historical, sociological, anthropological, and comparative/ international perspectives on educational trends and issues; Higher Education focuses upon research concerning higher education policies, programs, and services, including Student Affairs; and Measurement and Evaluation focuses upon approaches to evaluating educational policies and programs, advancing critical quantitative techniques used in such evaluation settings, as well as examining the relationships among ethics and educational policy analysis.

 Degree programs offered by EPE:

The Department's faculty represents a wide spectrum of intellectual orientations, professional commitments, and experience. This diversity provides a high level of interdisciplinary conversation,  and most of our faculty is either formally or informally connected to other university programs and departments both within the College of Education and the larger university. Learn more about our department research interests here.

We offer a great deal of degree of flexibility in planning student program -- which includes opportunities for independent study, affiliation with faculty from other departments in the College and the University, and extramural internships -- to accommodate students with a variety of backgrounds and goals. Some graduates pursue academic careers as faculty members or administrators. Others serve as policy analysts or specialists in evaluation for school systems, state departments of education, and other public and private institutions.  We welcome you to study and collaborate with us!
