Vick Named Chair of the Accreditation Commission for AdvancED

UK College of Education alumna Barbara Vick was elected to serve as Chair of the Accreditation Commission for AdvancED at the 2009 AdvancED Board of Trustees meeting held in Alpharetta, Ga., June 19. AdvancED is the parent organization of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). Vick currently serves as assistant superintendent in the McCracken County (Ky.) Schools.

As Chair, Vick will be responsible for presiding over the meetings of the Commission where accreditation matters are discussed and accreditation actions are taken. She also will provide leadership to the Commission members regarding accreditation matters. In addition to accreditation actions, the AdvancED Accreditation Commission reviews and approves revisions to the accreditation standards and accreditation policies and manages any appeals of accreditation status.

Vick has served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for McCracken County Schools since 1997. She previously served as Supervisor of Instruction for Livingston County Schools and as a family and consumer science teacher at Livingston Central High School. Her professional career also includes service as a County Extension Agent for 4-H, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.

Vick holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Murray State University, and she received her doctorate in educational leadership and administration from the UK College of Education in 2002. She has provided leadership for several regional and state professional organizations, and has served as both a member and chairperson of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Kentucky Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. Vick also has served on the AdvancED Accreditation Commission for the last three years and was elected vice chair in 2008.

Additionally, Vick received the Kentucky Association of Education Supervisors Outstanding Educator of the Year Award in 2004 and the Outstanding Award of Merit from the Kentucky School Media Association in 2006. She was the recipient of the Kentucky Excellence in Education Award from AdvancED in 2009.
