Dr. Cindy Jong is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education who joined the STEM Education Department at the University of Kentucky in 2011. She holds a B.A. in Elementary Education and M.Ed. in Mathematics Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Jong taught at the elementary level in the Clark County School District for prior to earning her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Mathematics Education at Boston College.
Her research applies the constructs of affect (i.e., attitudes, beliefs, and dispositions) and professional noticing in mathematics to understand how elementary teachers position themselves in relation to contexts and experiences that might influence their identity and classroom practices. Social justice and equity are central to her research in mathematics teacher education, and she has been awarded grants from the National Science Foundation to advance this work. Dr. Jong enjoys preparing teacher candidates to teach mathematics equitably to elementary students. She also teaches a graduate course on Equity in STEM Education.
At the College of Education, she has co-chaired and actively participated in the Inclusiveness Committee. At the University of Kentucky, she has chaired and participated in the Senate Advisory Committee for Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Jong has chaired the Steering Committee of the Psychology of Mathematics Education in North America and collaborated with members to write the first Equity Statement. She has served as program co-chair for the American Educational Research Association Division K, section 1. She has also served on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Annual Meeting program committee.
