Kinesiology and Health Promotion Professor, Alumni Receive Honors

A faculty member and four alumni from the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at the University of Kentucky College of Education have been recognized for contributions to their fields.

The Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD) named:

  • Heather Erwin, chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion, as University Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Erwin is program faculty chair for the physical education teacher certification program at the UK College of Education.
  • Lydia Austin, a teacher at Brenda Cowan Elementary and part-time instructor for UK dance courses, as 2019 Dance Teacher of the Year.
  • Mary Jo Geddes, a teacher at Tates Creek High School, as 2019 Health Education Teacher of the Year. Geddes frequently mentors UK students completing student teaching in health and physical education.
  • Scott McAtee, a retired Veteran’s Park Elementary physical education teacher, as the 2019-20 Lifetime Member.

The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America) named:

  • LaDonda Porter, a Beaumont Middle School teacher, as the 2020 Southern District Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. She was chosen from among teachers in 13 states and will compete for national honors at the SHAPE America convention in April in Salt Lake City.
