The 2014 Kentucky Teacher of the Year program recognized two UK College of Education alums. Melanie Trowel and Joanna Howerton Stevens were named middle and high school teachers of the year, respectively. Trowel is a science teacher at Carter G. Woodson Academy in Fayette County and Stevens is a mathematics teacher at Lincoln County High School. Stevens and Trowel received $3,000 each and a customized art-glass vase from Ashland Inc.
Stevens and Trowel joined UK College of Education Dean Mary John O’Hair on the court during the UK men’s basketball game against Tennessee Jan. 18. They were recognized for their teaching accomplishments during a game time out at Rupp Arena.
