Erwin Named Editor of Physical Education Journal

Dr. Heather Erwin has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Her four-year term will start in July as incoming editor-in-chief for the first two years of her appointment and as editor-in-chief the following two years.

Among her dozens of published works, Erwin has appeared in the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education six times. The studies have focused on activity levels during physical education classes. One examined how lesson content and teacher style impact students’ motivation and physical activity levels. Another looked at children’s motor competence, physical activity, and fitness in relation to what they had access to in their environments.

“The editorial team will be reviewing manuscripts from some of the leading scholars in the physical education teaching field,” Erwin said. “As my colleagues and I conduct research to help make advances in this field, sharing our work in journals helps disseminate new and important knowledge, which will ultimately lead to improvements in physical education for students. The opportunity to make this kind of impact is the most rewarding part of my role.”

Peer-reviewed studies in the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education are based on classroom and laboratory studies, descriptive and survey studies, summary and review articles, and discussion of current topics of interest to physical educators at every level.

As chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion, Erwin oversees a variety of research and academic programs at the University of Kentucky College of Education. The department houses undergraduate programs in kinesiology (physical education), health promotion (health education), health promotion (non-teaching), and exercise science (non-teaching). At the graduate level, the department has programs in biomechanics, exercise physiology, health promotion, sport leadership, teaching, coaching, and sport psychology. Additionally, the department offers several certificate programs.

Erwin earned her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Her research interests include school-based physical activity in children and adolescents with special attention to physical education, classroom physical activity, and recess. She teaches courses in physical education methods in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion.
