Kaitlin Smith Ayres, a student in the moderate and severe disabilities alternative certification program, was awarded the American Council on Rural Special Education (ACRES) Teacher Scholarship Award at the council’s annual conference in March. The award is given to a practicing rural teacher to provide an opportunity to pursue education in a formal program that leads to a specialized certificate, an additional endorsement, or a graduate degree. Ayres teaches students with moderate and severe disabilities at Whitley County High School in Whitley County, Ky.
