University Council for Educational Administration

UCEA LogoThe University of Kentucky—specifically the Department of Educational Leadership Studies (EDL)—is a founding member of UCEA, established in 1956, and has maintained continuous membership through today. UCEA is an international consortium of universities that offer doctoral programs in educational leadership and administration and are marked by a distinguishing commitment and capacity to lead the field of educational leadership and administration. We are one of only two universities in Kentucky to hold this distinction (with the University of Louisville) and one of less than 100 universities worldwide.

UCEA is a founding member of the National Policy Board for Educational Administration and works closely with other national organizations (e.g., Council of Chief State School Officers, the American Association of School Administrators, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Educational Research Association) to improve the preparation and practice of school and district leaders.

UCEA has a single standard of excellence for membership: Superior institutional commitment and capacity to provide leadership for the advancement of educational leadership preparation, scholarship, and practice. Membership in UCEA thus requires a rigorous, multi-stage review and renewal process—that carefully exams the quality of preparation and research programs.

UCEA Program Centers focus research and development work in target areas of contemporary importance and interest. UK co-sponsored the UCEA Center for the Study of the Superintendence (1998-2008) and currently sponsors the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE), the nation’s only center dedicated to the technology needs of school leaders.

EDL professors have actively supported UCEA’s mission to disseminate high-quality research findings through service as the editorial team (1998-2004) responsible for publication of Educational Administration Quarterly, the premier journal in the field of educational leadership and administration. Currently, EDL professors serve as members of editorial boards or peer reviewers for Educational Administration Quarterly and Journal of Research on Leadership Education as well as the editor of the UCEA Research Utilization Briefs.

UCEA is currently hosted by the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education. For more information visit the UCEA web page at
