Annual EDL Doctoral Student Summer Colloquium
Affectionately known as “Doc Week”
2020 Doc Week Dates
Sunday, July 12- Friday, July 17, 2019
What is Doc Week?
Doc Week is an annual week-long academic and social colloquium designed to support the growth of students in doctoral study in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies.
Because nearly all doctoral students in our program participate in their program online, Doc Week is an important opportunity for students to spend concentrated time with their professors and classmates in a fun, engaging, and thought-provoking environment.
Attendance at Doc Week is not required, however, attendance is strongly encouraged. The experience generally speaks for itself. Students who don’t attend usually regret it.
When Is Doc Week?
Doc Week typically takes place in the second or third week of July. In general, the week runs as follows:
Sunday: Informal social kickoff 5pm-8pm
Monday-Thursday Morning: Scheduled programming 9am-4pm each day.
Social activities happen in most evenings.
Thursday Afternoon: Capstone activity.
Friday – TBD
What Do Students Say About Doc Week?
“It was critical to be on campus (at Doc Week) just to build relationships with cohorts and to hear small tidbits of advice that were interspersed throughout, whether it be from faculty, experienced students, or other cohort members.” (2016 participant)
“It really helped me to feel more connected to the professors, and especially to the school (which I really had no connection to prior (to enrolling at UK)). The faculty does a great job at making connections online through…class, but it’s elevated when you actually get to sit with them in person.” (2016 participant)
“Doc Week built community among the cohort, demystified faculty, illuminated the dissertation process, and required us to focus on a dissertation topic. I think those were the overarching purposes and Doc Week met every mark.” (2016 participant)
All About Doc Week
In this archived Google Hangout, hosted by the Department of Educational Leadership Studies, faculty and doctoral students discuss what takes place at Doc Week and what benefits come to those who participate.
Does It Cost Anything?
There is no fee to attend Doc Week. All costs associated with travel to, and your stay in, Lexington are your responsibility. You should expect to cover your own expenses for food and miscellaneous items. There will be some points in the week when you’ll be offered opportunities to be social (some local tourism, an evening outside with drinks, and possibly a band).
Where Is It Held?
Most of the daytime activities take place on the UK Campus.
Where Do Students Stay?
In the past, students who live a considerable distance from the UK campus arranged housing through local hotels, private home rental (e.g. AirBnB), at friends’ homes, or via on-campus housing in student dormitories.
