Justin Bathon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies at the University of Kentucky and a Director of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE). Justin focuses on the underlying code of education and the changes necessitated by the digital, global age. This work looks at the intersections of education, law, and technology and translates research into specific actions for local learning communities. Justin has legal and educational experience at the local, state, national, and international levels including as a high school teacher in southern Illinois. He holds a J.D. from Southern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in Education Policy from Indiana University.

Dr. Björk has co-edited: Higher Education Research and Public Policy (1988), Minorities in Higher Education (1994), and The New Superintendency: Advances in Research and Theories of School Management and Educational Policy(2001) and The Contemporary Superintendent: Preparation, Practice and Development (2005). In addition, he has co-authored, The Study of the American Superintendency 2000: A look at the Superintendent of Education in the New Millennium (2000), The Superintendent as CEO: Standards-based Performance(2005) and is a contributing author in The School Superintendent: Theory, Practice, and Cases (2006). He holds faculty appointments at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland and the Ministry of Education (PRC), National Training Center for Secondary School Principals (Shanghai). He was a Fulbright Scholar (2009, Finland) and helped conduct their national superintendent study. He has consulted with Universities in the United States, Europe and China, school districts, state governments, national associations, international agencies, and on committees and task forces in the United States Department of Education. In addition, he has presented keynote addresses at international conferences on educational leadership.

Professor Tricia Browne-Ferrigno (Curriculum Vita) joined the UK Department of Educational Leadership Studies in August 2001 as a first-year assistant professor. She earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Innovation from the University of Colorado at Denver, M.A. in Special Education/Gifted from the University of South Florida, and B.A. in Secondary Mathematics Education from Florida State University. Her primary research agenda centers on leadership preparation and development, specifically the lived experiences of those actively involved, program features and their impact on adult learning, and program evaluation. Her scholarship also examines school improvement, professional mentoring, and innovations in doctoral education. Prior to entering higher education, Professor Browne-Ferrigno worked as a research consultant for the Education Commission of the States (Denver, CO) and as a teacher leader in secondary mathematics and gifted education at H. B. Plant High School (Tampa, FL). From 1991 to 1993 she served as the National Consultant Secondary Mathematics for Scott Foresman, providing support for the adoption and implementation of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) textbook series.

Maria Cahill, Ph.D.

Maria Cahill, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information Sciences in the College of Communication and Information and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. Her scholarship is balanced between education and library science with two research concentrations: one in the use of educational media to support literacy development and the other in school library education. Maria served as the PI on an Institute of Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program-funded training grant designed to prepare individuals to serve as children’s librarians with expertise in early literacy and family literacy programming. She is a former school librarian and is currently a member of the Editorial Board for School Library Research.

Wayne D. Lewis, Jr. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies and an affiliated faculty member with the African American and Africana Studies Program at the University of Kentucky. His teaching, writing, and research are in the areas of educational leadership and policy, the politics of education, and student of color success. Wayne is a former a middle and high school special education teacher, having taught in public school districts in Louisiana (New Orleans Public Schools and St. Charles Parish Public Schools) and North Carolina (Wake County Public Schools).

John B. Nash is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies. He teaches a range of courses on school technology leadership, design thinking and research methods. His current research agenda investigates how technology, innovation and policy interact and influence schools and educators in different contexts. John is also a director of the UCEA Center for Advanced Study of Leadership for Technology in Education (CASTLE) and the Laboratory on Design Thinking in Education (dLab).

John is the former Associate Director for Evaluation at the Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning (SCIL), where he conducted applied research on improving program evaluation in grant-funded initiatives, and the former Associate Director of Assessment and Research at the Stanford Learning Laboratory, where he examined the effects of innovative technologies on learning. He was also a grantmaker for the Wallenberg Global Learning Network, an arm of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation of Stockholm, Sweden, focused on enhancing learning outcomes through educational technology in the U.S., Sweden and Germany.

Dr. Mary John O’Hair is the ninth dean of the University of Kentucky College of Education. She comes to UK from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., where Dr. O’Hair served as vice provost for school and community partnerships since 2006. She was founding director of OU’s K20 Center for Educational and Community Renewal, a statewide, interdisciplinary research and development center that connected OU with over 500 schools and communities across Oklahoma. Dr. O’Hair has published numerous articles and books on systemic innovation, organizational learning, and school-university-community partnerships. At OU since 1994, Dean O’Hair held the positions of professor of educational leadership and policy, director of educational administration, curriculum and supervision, and associate dean of research and graduate studies in the OU College of Education.

Beth S. Rous is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies. She teaches courses in research methods. Her research agenda focuses on the translation of research to practice to support high quality programs, specifically investigating the implementation of large-scale systems (policy, practice, professional development) to support the quality across sectors (education, health, human services) for children from birth through the early grades.

Beth is also the Director for the Kentucky Partnership for Early Childhood Service, housed at the Human Development Institute (kentuckypartnership.org). Through the Kentucky Partnership, Dr. Rous oversees over $7 million a year in grants and contracts to support quality services for young children, families and the professionals who work with them. She has served as technical advisor/consultant at the national level for both Education and Health and Human Services on initiatives such as congressional mandated studies (National Assessment of IDEA and Study of IDEA Implementation),and national longitudinal studies (Pre-Elementary Education Longitudinal Study – PEELS; Head Start Family Child Experiences Survey – FACES).

Clinical Faculty

To supplement the core, mostly research-based, full-time faculty at UK we employ a number of continuing part-time clinical faculty. Frequently these faculty are paired with a full-time faculty member to co-deliver courses. Because we have long-term relationships with our part-time faculty, we do evaluate the quality of their instruction and you can be certain of both their qualifications and their abilities as educational leadership instructors.


Carmen Coleman

Carmen Coleman (Curriculum Vita), formerly Superintendent of Danville Independent Schools, is now an associate clinical professor in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies at the University of Kentucky. In this role, she works with National Center for Innovation in Education and the Next Generation Leadership Academy. While serving as superintendent in Danville, the district focus was to create a system of personalized learning, one with flexibility designed to inspire students to become strong and enthusiastic learners rather than those who can only clear test score hurdles. As result, Danville was chosen as one of the first Districts of Innovation in the state. Because of their success and work with project-based learning and performance-based assessments, the district was featured on PBS’ NewsHour, in the Harvard Letter, District Administration and multiple times in Tom VanderArk’s Getting Smart blog as well as in many other state and national publications. 

Prior to her time in Danville, Carmen served as a director of elementary schools in Fayette County, the second largest school district in Kentucky. In addition, she has been both an elementary school principal and teacher.

Before serving as deputy commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education, Linda spent 26 years in the Jessamine County school system where she was superintendent from 1998 to 2004.

Dr. Lu Young (Curriculum Vita) currently serves as the Chief Academic Officer, Fayette County Public Schools. Before assuming her position in Fayette County in 2013 she served as the Superintendent of Jessamine County Public Schools from 2004 through 2013. Much of her love for Jessamine County stems from time spent learning from her mentors, she said. As Superintendent of Jessamine County Schools, a medium-sized P-12 district located in Nicholasville, Kentucky, she focused on ensuring that every child in every school was motivated and challenged to be a caring, responsible citizen and a high-level thinker, performer, communicator, and learner for life. She remains passionate about seizing the opportunity to transform classrooms and schools into rigorous next-generation learning environments where every child graduates ready for success in college and career.

Rika is an associate professor in the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies at the University of Pretoria and the Director of the Interuniversity Centre for Education Law and Policy (CELP). She is a founding member of the South African Education Law Association. She specializes in school governance, school safety and school discipline and has presented papers at international conferences in the USA., Australia, New Zealand, Europe, England, China, Cyprus and Hong Kong. She teaches education law to education managers at post graduate level. Her publications include books on law in education, school governance and discipline in schools. Rika is a NRF rated researcher and a adjunct professor at the University of Kentucky in the USA.

Stu Silberman has led two school districts to prominence in the state of Kentucky and has three times been named the state Superintendent of the Year (twice by the Kentucky Association of School Administrators and once by the Kentucky School Boards Association). Most recently, he was among the four finalists for AASA’s National Superintendent of the Year Award. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Prichard Committee. He was nominated by the University of Kentucky Department of Educational Leadership Studies (EDL) and received the University Council for Education Administration (UCEA) 2010 Excellence in Leadership Award. His tenure as Superintendent of the Fayette County Public Schools (2004-2011) andDaviess County (1995-2004) were marked by a commitment to transparency and openness with the public, fiscal responsibility and tremendous community efforts to redesign education. His clear focus on closing achievement gaps and holding all students to high expectations contributed to dramatic increases in student academic achievement. He discussed his work on The Today Show in 2010 and currently authors a national blog for Education Week.

Matt Thompson has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning for Scott County Schools for the past three years. Prior to this position, he served as Director of Elementary Schools (Scott County), Principal of Deep Springs Elementary (Fayette County), and as a third and fourth grade teacher at Bridgeport Elementary (Franklin County). His focus on student learning and leadership growth has helped the district make academic gains during his tenure. His dissertation, Principals’ Perceptions of Experiences that Helped to Improve Their Practice as Instructional Leaders, provided the research data with which he designed a district-wide, instructional leader training program for principals. He is presenting his research on instructional leadership at the 2013 University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Convention. He has also co-authored a chapter in School Violence and Primary Prevention (2008).

Theodore Kowalski, Professor and the Kuntz Family Endowed Chair at the University of Dayton, is the author of numerous books, professional articles, research papers, and monographs, He has received awards for his research, writing, and scholarship including the Outstanding Faculty Research Award from the Teachers College at Ball State University in 1993, the Outstanding Faculty Scholarship Award from the School of Education and Health Sciences at the University of Dayton in both 2002 and 2005, and the Alumni Award in Scholarship from the University of Dayton in 2005. Most recently, he received the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of School Administrators in recognition of his research and books on school district administration. Dr. Kowalski has served as the editor of the Journal of School Public Relations and serves on the editorial boards of Educational Administration Quarterly and the AASA Journal of Scholarship and Practice. In 2000, he was editor of the 2001 National Council of Professors of Educational Administration Yearbook, the first yearbook of the new millennium.
