Professor Fred Danner was unsure what to make of the small crowd that had gathered outside his office in Dickey Hall. Danner’s fellow faculty and staff members from the Department of Educational, School and Counseling Psychology joined UK College of Education Dean Mary John O’Hair, while others snapped photos and shot video footage of the occasion. As he was handed congratulatory balloons from a UK Alumni Association (UKAA) staff member, Danner still was confused.

However, UKAA Director Stan Key cleared the air when he told Danner that he was one of six UK educators selected as a 2011 Great Teacher. Nominated by one of his students, Danner was chosen from a large pool of submissions. As his reward, Danner will receive a small stipend and will be honored by UK President Lee T. Todd, Jr. at a UK basketball game and a banquet in February.

“I was totally surprised by this honor,” Danner said. “I am enormously pleased that one of my students saw fit to nominate me and that the UK Alumni Association has a program that recognizes and promotes good teaching.”
