College of Education Scholarships, Fellowships, and Assistantships

 

Alma Lee Allen Special Education Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Dr. Carol Chase Thomas

The scholarship is awarded to students who are majoring in special education.  They must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need.  Priority is given to non-traditional students.  It must go to a different student each year.

Alumni Undergraduate Scholarship Fund
Established in 2005 by College of Education Annual Giving Donors

The scholarship is awarded to students who are determined to be outstanding prospects for academic and professional success.

Area High School Scholarship
Awarded by College of Education General Scholarship Fund

The scholarship is awarded to promising area high school seniors who want to major in Education programs.

Helene Arnold Scholarship Fund
Established in 2006 by Hazel Arnold in honor of her sister, Helene Arnold

The scholarship is awarded to students who are outstanding prospects for academic and professional success within the field of Elementary Education.

William R. Black Fund for Educators
Established in 2008 by Christopher and Nancy Black in honor of his father, William R. Black

The scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Education.  They must exhibit qualities of leadership among their peers, demonstrate a commitment to serve public education and who are willing to teach at risk students in Kentucky for a period of not less than three years.

Bluegrass Retired Teachers Association Scholarship
Established in 2004 by the Bluegrass Retired Teachers Association

The scholarship is awarded to students who are entering their junior or senior year, enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.1, demonstrate financial need and write an essay describing their desire to be an educator and their activities.

Opal Tyree Bondurant/Theresa Williams Bondurant Scholarship
Established in 1993 by John Bondurant in honor of Opal Tyree Bondurant and Theresa Williams Bondurant

The Scholarship is awarded to students who are planning a career in classroom teaching and is based on merit and financial need.

James & Ollie Bradbury Undergraduate Elementary or Secondary
Established in 2006 by James and Ollie Bradbury

The scholarship is awarded to students who are fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program and are enrolled full time as a junior or senior. 
For students from Wolfe, Perry, Breathitt or Madison Counties.

Charles Arvid Browning Scholarship Fund
Established in 1992 by Hazel, Sara Ann and Mark Browning in memory of Charles Arvid Browning

The Scholarship is given to students who are residents of Kentucky, North Carolina or Ohio, are enrolled in the College of Education and show a need for financial assistance.

John P. & Frances Charlton Samuels Presidential Scholarship
Established in 2010 by B. Kaye Samuels Burton and James A. Burton in honor of John P. and Frances Charlton Samuels

The scholarship is given to students who meet the criteria of University Presidential Scholars (GSP/GSA or 28 ACT and 3.75 GPA.) They must be majoring in Education. Preference is given to residents of Bullitt County.

Columbia Gas Minority Scholarship
Established in 2003 by Columbia Gas of Kentucky

The scholarship is awarded to minority students seeking teacher certification at the undergraduate level.

Grace Evensen Overseas Teaching Fellowship
Established in 2002 by Grace Evensen

The scholarship is awarded to students who fulfill their student teaching requirement through participation in the Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program.  Students will demonstrate interest in promoting intercultural understanding and demonstrate financial need.

Sarah Ruth Geurin Scholarship
Established in 1987 by a bequest from the estate of Sarah Ruth Geurin

The scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the College of Education who have demonstrated potential for success.  Scholarships include undergraduate, graduate, Masters with Initial Certification (MIC) and COST students.

Lyman V. Ginger Scholarship Fund
Established in 1987 in honor of Lyman V. Ginger

The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated potential for academic success, leadership, and commitment to teaching as a profession. For graduating high school seniors or non-traditional students.

E.O. Robinson Mountain Fund Honoring Lyman V. Ginger
Established in 1987 by the E. O Robinson Mountain Fund in honor of Lyman V. Ginger

The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated potential for academic success, leadership, and a commitment to teaching as a profession.  For graduating high school seniors or non-traditional students from 25 Eastern Kentucky Counties.

Larry E. Gossett Education Scholarship
Established in 2011 by Larry E. Gossett

The scholarship is awarded to students who graduated from a high school in the Northern Kentucky region with preference given to graduates from Harrison County.  They must be enrolled in the College of Education and maintain a 3.0 GPA with demonstrated need for financial assistance.

Donald & Carolyn Hartman Undergraduate Scholarship in Elementary Education
Established in 2012 by Chas J. and Jeanne Hartman in honor of Donald and Carolyn Hartman

The scholarship is awarded to full-time students who are in elementary education and demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

Rutherford B. Hays Scholarship
Established in 2012 from the estate of Carolyn Harvey in memory of her father, Rutherford B. Hays

The scholarship is for students who are first generation students who are majoring in Education.

Bernard “Skeeter” Johnson Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2003 by Frances Lee Johnson in memory and honor of Bernard “Skeeter” Johnson

The scholarship is awarded to students who are undergraduates in the department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion who have outstanding prospects for academic and professional success and have a financial need.

Mary King Montgomery Kouns Dance Ensemble Scholarship
Established in 2006 by Cynthia Kouns Matthews in memory of her mother, Mary King Montgomery Kouns

The scholarship is awarded to students who are active members of the UK Dance Ensemble with a GPA of 3.0, and show leadership.

KHP Student Assistance Fund
Established in 2002 by the KHP Department

Lovaine C. Lewis – Delta Psi Kappa Scholarship Fund
Established by Mrs. George Lewis in honor of her daughter Lovaine C. Lewis

The scholarship is awarded to a KHP major who is a junior or senior with a 3.0 GPA.  They must have demonstrated involvement in the profession and potential as a leader.

Junita Losey Scholarship- Kentucky Teacher’s Retirement System
Established in 2000 by the Kentucky Teacher’s Retirement System in honor of Junita Losey

The scholarship is awarded to a student who is a graduate of a Kentucky public high school and who is a full-time junior or senior majoring in education with at least a 2.8 GPA.

William Gary Martin Scholarship Fund
Established in 1993 by William and Dorothy T. Martin in memory of their son, William Gary Martin

The scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled in the College of Education who show a need for financial assistance and are graduates of Allen Central or South Floyd High School in Floyd County.

Allie George Mason, Sr. Memorial Fund
Established in 1988 by Mrs. A. George Mason in memory of her husband, Allie George Mason, Sr.

The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated potential for academic success and a commitment to teaching as a profession.

Alice Lee McCullough Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 1999 by Marylou Routh for the estate of Alice Lee McCullough

The scholarship is awarded to full-time students in the College of Education with a preference for students seeking to teach the primary grades and exhibit financial need.

Fannie H. Miller Motivational Fund
Established in 1993 by friends of Fannie H. Miller

An assistance fund for students in the College of Education.

Nollau Award
Established in 2009 from the estate of Hazel Fenton Nollau

The scholarship is awarded to outstanding science teacher education students.

Perkins Family Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2000 by James Perkins in memory and honor of Harry D. Perkins, Sr., Juanita A. Perkins and their son, Harry D. Perkins, Jr.

The scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who is a resident of Bracken County with a desire to major within the College of Education and exhibits financial need.

Carol Lee Robertson Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2011 by Ken and Carol Lee Robertson

The scholarship is awarded to full-time undergraduate students majoring in the College of Education who maintain a 3.0 GPA.

J. Randall Rogers Scholarship Fund
Established in 1995 by Ronald K. and Virginia A. Atwood

The scholarship is awarded to students who have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program in Elementary Education.

Rotary Club of Lexington Scholarship
Annual award given by the Rotary Club of Lexington

The scholarship is awarded to a student based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and leadership. They must be a full-time junior or senior in the College of Education with a 3.5 GPA.

William S. Taylor Memorial Fund
Established in 1949 by the College of Education to honor
William S. Taylor

An assistance fund for students in the College of Education.

Barbara Ayres Threadgill Scholarship for Development
Established in 1992 by the College of Education in honor of Barbara Ayres Threadgill

The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated potential for academic success and have an interest in the College of Education Development program.

Lucille R. Weitzel Scholarship Fund
Established by the estate of Lucille R. Weitzel’s husband

The scholarship is for students in the College of Education with a minimum of a 27 on the ACT and who maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

Angene Hopkins Wilson International Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2008 by Angene H. Wilson

The scholarship is awarded to students who apply to travel abroad for study or research or with the COST program.

Mary Beth Sammons Henthorne Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2013 by Mary Beth Sammons Henthorne in memory of her grandmother and mother, Mary Beverly Vance and Marjorie Vance Sammons

The scholarship will be awarded to students who are from Floyd County, are enrolled in the College of Education, are pursuing a degree in Teacher Certification and are in good academic standing.

Wilma Howard Klein Scholarship
Established in 2013 by Wilma Howard Klein

The scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior who plans to teach following graduation.

Established in 2005 by College of Education Annual Giving Donors

The scholarship is awarded to students who are determined to be
outstanding prospects for academic and professional success.

George & Lena Charles Bailey Scholarship Fund
Established in 1999 by George Bailey in honor of his wife, Lena Charles Bailey

The scholarship is awarded to Eastern Kentucky Teachers returning to earn undergraduate or graduate college credits.  It may also be awarded for summer courses or special institutes at the University of Kentucky.

James R. Barclay Graduate Enrichment Fund
Established in 1991 by the College of Education in honor of James R. Barclay

The fund is to enrich graduate studies in Educational, Counseling and School Psychology.

Blackhurst Student Research Fund
Established in 1999 by A. Edward and Anita Blackhurst

The fund is to support research conducted by students who are pursuing graduate degrees in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling.

Dermontti F. & Regina M. Dawson Graduate Fellowship
Established in 2001 by Dermontti and Regina Dawson

The scholarship is awarded to graduate students who are outstanding prospects for academic and professional success.  Preference is given to minority students and then non-traditional students.

George Denemark Scholarship Fund
Established in 1985 by the College of Education in memory of George Denemark

The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student whose career goal is to become a teacher-educator.

Frank G. & Elizabeth D. Dickey Scholarship
Established in 2002 by Frank and Elizabeth Dickey

The scholarship is awarded to students who are outstanding prospects for academic and professional success with preference to students who exhibit financial need.

Economic Education Graduate Fellowship Fund
Established in 2001 by Gina Hampton and Mark Sievers

This fund is to assist students from Jessamine County and those participating in the Lexington Partnership for Workforce Development or an equivalent program to attend the College of Education.  Financial need is considered.

Barbara J. Edwards Special Education Fellowship
Established in 2006 by Barbara J. Edwards

This scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a doctorate in Special Education and have a GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to minority students who are underrepresented in the College of Education.

Joan P. Gipe Fellowship Fund in Literacy
Established in 2013 by Joan P. Gipe

The scholarship is awarded to students who are Master’s or Doctoral students training for a career in Literacy with preference given to a student who intends to work in schools to improve reading performance of economically disadvantaged students.

Lauranne Laise Howell Graduate Fellowship in Economic Education
Established in 2002 by S. Oden (Denny) Howell in honor of Lauranne Laise Howell

The fund may be expended for, but not limited to, such things as stipends for outstanding graduate students.

Margaret Bell Humphreys Endowed Scholarships & Stipends for Teachers with a Priority for Economic Education
Established in 2009 by the College of Education in honor of Margaret Bell Humphreys

The scholarship is for teachers with a preference for teachers of Economic Education.

Bethe Korfhage, Ph.D Endowed Fellowship in Counseling and Educational Psychology
Established in 2007 by Thelma and Chester Korfhage and Brian Thompson in memory of their daughter and wife, Bethe A. Korfhage, Ph.D.

The scholarship is awarded to graduate students in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology with preference given to students who are conducting research in the areas of LGBT issues, multiculturalism and/or diversity.

C. Michael Nelson Endowed Graduate Fellowship in the Dept. of Special Education & Rehabilitation Counseling
Established in 2004 by C. Michael Nelson

The scholarship is awarded to graduate students in good standing who are pursuing majors in Emotional and Behavioral Disorder programs in the Department of Special Education & Rehabilitation Counseling to support scholarship conducted as part of a Thesis, Dissertation or Research Project.

Bob Ogletree Fellowship Endowment
Established in 2010 by the Department of Educational Leadership Studies

The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in Educational Leadership who exhibits the professional goals and practices modeled by Bob Ogletree.

John Edwin Partington & Gwendolyn Gray Partington
Established in 1998 by John Edwin and Gwendolyn Gray Partington

The scholarship is awarded to graduate students enrolled in the College of Education who show need for financial assistance.

Porter Minority Fellowship in Education
Established in 2011 by Dr. Sharon Porter Robinson

The scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a master or doctorate in a field associated with practice in preK-12 schools.  They must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be a minority student.

Shirley C. Raines Endowed Graduate Fellowship for Teachers
Established in 2001 by Shirley C. Raines

The scholarship shall be awarded to a P-12 classroom teacher seeking full or part-time graduate study in the College of Education who is an outstanding prospect for academic and professional success.

Reading Scholarship Fund
Established in 1992 by Connie A. Bridge

The scholarship is awarded to graduate students of promise who are enrolled in the College of Education’s Reading Program.

Edgar L. & Marilyn A. Sagan Fellowship
Established in 1990 by their children in honor of Edgar L. and Marilyn A. Sagan

The scholarship is awarded to Master’s or Doctoral students majoring in Educational Policy Studies with a specialization in higher education.

Doris Nowak & William E. Stilwell, III Graduate Fellowship in Educational & Counseling Psychology
Established in 2006 by Doris Nowak and William E. Stilwell, III

The scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a graduate degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25.

Della Marie Johnson Endowed Research Fund
Established in 2006 by Helen Thacker Hill in honor of Della Marie Johnson

The fund shall be used to provide grants for research projects to be conducted by faculty in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program in collaboration with rehabilitation programs in the public sector in Kentucky.  A graduate student must participate in each approved project.  There is a special emphasis on proposals that address traumatic brain injury and cognitive impairments.

Martin-Thacker Scholarship
Established in 1998 by Leslie L. Martin and Helen Thacker Hill

The scholarship is awarded to students who are full-time Rehabilitation Counseling students who have certified disabilities and have met all requirements for admission to the Master’s Degree program; are from rural areas and are committed to careers in rehabilitation of developmentally disabled adults in rural areas.

Leslie L. Martin Endowed Research Fellowship
Established in 2005 by Helen Thacker Hill in honor of Leslie L. Martin

The scholarship is for students who have been appointed to assist a faculty member in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation to conduct research.

Leslie Martin Endowed Fellowship Fund in the Department of Educational Counseling & Psychology
Established in 2001 by Helen Thacker Hill and Leslie L. Martin

The scholarship is awarded to current or incoming graduate students in the Department of Educational Counseling and Psychology and are deemed capable of fulfilling the research priorities set forth by the Chair.

Helen Thacker Graduate Fellowship in Educational & Counseling Psychology
Established in 2000 by Helen Thacker Hill

The scholarship is awarded to graduate students who are engaged in active research in psychological aspects of educational counseling.

Wallace Charles Hill Graduate Fellowship in Administration & Supervision
Established in 1999 by Helen Thacker Hill in memory of her husband, Wallace Charles Hill

The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Administration and Supervision

Arvle & Ellen Turner Thacker Endowment Fund
Established in 2002 by Helen Thacker Hill in honor of her parent’s Arvle and Ellen Turner Thacker

The fund is to provide stipends for students doing graduate study in the College of Education.

James Arvle Thacker Fund
Established in 2004 by Helen Thacker Hill in memory of her brother, James Arvle Thacker

The scholarship is awarded to students who are from Georgia and Kentucky and are enrolled in the Master’s degree web-based Rehabilitation Program.  The student must have completed thirty hours with a GPA of 3.7. If the web-based program is discontinued it shall be awarded in the regular program in Rehabilitation Counseling.
