Olivas to Deliver EPE Colloquium Talk Feb. 4

Dr. Michael A. Olivas will speak on “God, Grades and Sex: The Developing Law of the College Classroom” as part of the UK College of Education Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation’s colloquium series.

The talk with take place from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 in 109 Dickey Hall (Lena C. Bailey Room). It is free and open to the public.
 
Olivas is a University of Houston legal scholar who says that academic freedom is being tested nationwide, a situation ripening into legal challenges.
 
“While these challenges are almost always won by the faculty member, there are ways available to reduce the likelihood of such disputes being taken to court,” says Olivas, he William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law, University of Houston Law Center. “The faculty needs to be more vigilant and be aware that some students hold certain beliefs, and some are not willing to render unto Caesar.”

The colloquium is sponsored by the UK College of Education Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation (EPE) and the EPE Graduate Student Council
