Masters of Science in STEM Education
The University of Kentucky’s STEM PLUS+: Producing +eacher Leaders for Urban/rUral Schools Program is a Master’s of Science in STEM Education program designed to address expanded leadership expectations, especially in the content areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, for practicing educators in schools across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Our transdisciplinary degree program, designed in collaboration with P-12 school partners, will provide candidates with individualized coursework, professional development opportunities, and job-embedded experiences culminating in a capstone experience that combines action research, teacher leadership, and innovation.
Candidates will complete a program of studies individualized to their goals and future career desires that consists of 30 credit hours of approved graduate-level coursework, including a 12-credit-hour STEM Education Leadership core, 12-credit-hours of content electives, and 6-credit-hours of additional teacher leadership electives.
STEM PLUS+ will have the opportunity to work with P20 colleagues, education faculty, and content specialists through the many P20 opportunities at the University of Kentucky, including the P20 issues-based innovation labs that are charged with the responsibility of fostering new interdisciplinary, cross-college, and cross-institution partnerships to address critical issues associate with student learning in Kentucky schools. Although candidates may participate in any of the labs or other projects, the STEM Education faculty has identified six labs perceived as most appropriate for STEM PLUS+ candidates: Civic Engagement Lab, College and Career Readiness Lab, Education Policy and Law Lab, Motivation and Learning Lab, STEM Education Lab, and Technology Leadership Lab.
Coursework and experiences in the STEM PLUS+ Program are aligned with the relevant professional standards including the Kentucky Teacher Standards, the NCATE/NCTM Standards, the NCATE/NSTA Standards, the Kentucky Core Academic Standards for Mathematics (Common Core Standards for Mathematics), and the evolving NRC Framework for Science Education Standards in addition to unit standards identified in the conceptual framework, Research and Reflection for Learning and Leading. STEM PLUS+ candidate performance on these respective standards sets will be assessed at program admission, retention, and completion.
