Master's Degree with Coaching Specialization

Welcome to the Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) Department’s Coaching Specialization Graduate Program homepage. The Coaching Specialization Program in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at the University of Kentucky focuses on developing teachers and coaches. Our aim is to help teaching and coaching master’s students develop the knowledge and skills to be more effective practitioners and researchers in the field of coaching.

The master’s degree with a specialization in coaching is directed primarily at preparing students to be coaches at the elementary school, middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. Students who have an initial teacher certification in Physical Education have the opportunity to pursue a Rank II advanced teacher certification while completing their master’s degree in coaching.

The coaching specialization offers students the choice between the Thesis Option (24 hours of course work, 6 hours thesis) and a Course Work Option (30 hours of approved course work, written exams, and an oral exam). Beyond the 6 hours of core classes, courses are not limited to those listed as electives, but all courses are selected in consultation with an advisor. Even though possible electives are listed for each separate emphasis, it may be permissible to take electives from any of the three areas of emphasis listed under Teaching, Coaching, and Sport Leadership. Design of the program MUST be done in conjunction with the advisor.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion appreciate your interest in the master’s degree coaching specialization. For additional help, please contact us or visit our departmental office in Room 100 Seaton Center.
