EdD in Educational Policy Studies & Evaluation: Emphasis on Community & Technical College Leadership

The Department of Educational Policy Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Educational Leadership, is in the fourth year of a pilot project to examine alternative approaches to the EdD in Educational Policy Studies & Evaluation.

Working with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, the department enrolled a cohort of 28 students in the fall of 2007.  The cohort represents community and technical colleges across the Commonwealth of Kentucky including faculty, administrators, and student affairs practitioners.  KCTCS offers release time to allow participating students to travel to class and provides classroom space at the system offices in Versailles, KY.

Course delivery follows an "executive" model of monthly class meetings complemented by on-line learning.  The cohort has successfully completed their comprehensive exams and will submit their dissertation proposals in the spring of 2010 prior to being admitted to candidacy.  Another innovative feature of this project is a collaborative capstone process in which students will complete companion dissertations including co-authored elements as well as individual scholarship.  These capstone projects will reflect compelling problems of practice identified by KCTCS leadership.

In October of 2009, the KCTCS cohort presented a symposium, "Partnership Cohort to Prepare Community College Leaders: Participant Perspectives," at the 50th annual meeting of the Southern Regional Council on Educational Administration (SCREA) in Atlanta.  See below for copies of these conference papers.
