Dr. Brian Bottge
William T. Bryan Endowed Chair in Special Education

Brian Bottge is the William T. Bryan Endowed Chair in Special Education in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling. Prior to his appointment, he was Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he was awarded Emeritus Status.
Dr. Bottge has been awarded grants from the James S. McDonnell Foundation Cognitive Studies in Educational Practice program, the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), and the (IES) (Cognition and Student Learning, Goal 2) to develop an instructional method called Enhanced Anchored Instruction (EAI) for teaching adolescents who are low performing in math. Recently, he was awarded a four-year, $2.3 million grant (Cognition and Student Learning in Special Education) to conduct large-scale research to test the efficacy of EAI. He has combined his extensive classroom experience with learning theory to develop and test curricula for improving the mathematics achievement of students with disabilities. Findings from these studies have been reported in highly respected special education and general education journals. Recently, he served on the expert panel that prepared the U. S. Department of Education Practice Guide for Teachers on Organizing Instruction and Study to Improve Learning, which can be accessed on the Doing What Works website.
