DOCTORATE OF EDUCATION DEGREE
In
Instruction and Administration with a Program Emphasis
in Educational Leadership
The Department of Educational Leadership Studies offers the Ed.D. (Doctor of Education degree) in Instruction and Administration with a program emphasis in Educational Leadership. Four important themes are embedded in the Department’s Ed.D. program emphasis and are reflected throughout the content of course work:
- VALUING RESEARCH AND THE USE OF DATA
- FOSTERING EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT
- FOCUSING ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
- ADDRESSING CONCERNS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
Every student’s program of study for this Ed.D. has three essential elements:
- (1) the core curriculum;
- (2) a program major emphasis;
- and (3) a research sequence.
CORE CURRICULUM ………………………………………………… 15 HOURS
All students admitted to the Ed.D. program must take the Department’s core curriculum regardless of previous educational preparation, professional experience, or future career plans. This core curriculum includes the following courses:
EDL 771: SEMINAR IN ADM./THE KNOWLEDGE BASE FOR EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (3 HRS)
EDL 701: LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS I (3 HRS)
EDL 702: LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS II (3 HRS)
EDL 632: ADMINISTRATION OF EDUCATIONAL REFORM (3 HRS)
EDL 771: SEMINAR IN ADM./THE ADMINISTRATIVE CONTEXT OF EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE (3 HRS)
PROGRAM MAJOR EMPHASIS………………………………… 12-18 HOURS
All students must include at least one, coherent Program Major Emphasis (PME) in their Doctoral Program of Study. The purpose of this element is two-fold: (1) to support the core curriculum of the Educational Leadership and Administration specialization by adding depth and breadth with complementary cross-disciplinary study; and (2) to enhance preparation for conducting rigorous and meaningful dissertation research. To ensure breadth of exposure, each PME must include at least 12 hours of the course work in two or more academic disciplines other than educational administration and leadership.
As suggested below, the Advisory Committees of students wishing to do professional certification work as part of their doctoral program may approve incorporation of some certification courses into their PME, but the cross-disciplinary nature of this curricular component (at least 12 hours) must be maintained.
Each student should select a PME early in the course work phase of doctoral study, and that selection must be approved by the student’s major advisor and doctoral advisory committee before the PME course work is taken. Identified below are several PME areas currently recognized by the Department.
Other PME's may be developed to meet particular student needs and circumstances. However, departmental review by the Director of Graduate Studies and approval of the major advisor and doctoral advisory committee must all be secured before a student may embark upon a PME s other than those listed below.
- SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENCY (i.e., may include courses required to obtain licensure as a Kentucky school superintendent, as well as other related courses).
- INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP (i.e., may include courses in curriculum, instructional design and academic content areas from the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, as well as other related courses).
- VOCATIONAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP (i.e., may include courses focusing on licensure or post-certification issues of education-related vocational or technical leadership concern, as well as other related courses).
- THE PROFESSORIATE IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (i.e., may include courses in college teaching and learning, higher education, advanced research applications, as well as other related courses).
- INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION (i.e., may include courses required to obtain licensure as a Supervisor of Instruction in Kentucky, as well as other related courses).
- SCHOOL, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS (i.e., may include courses from the Department of Family Studies as well as other related courses).
- SCHOOL PRINCIPALSHIP AND LEADERSHIP (i.e., may include courses required to obtain licensure as a school principal in Kentucky, as well as other related courses).

- EDUCATION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE (i.e., may include courses from African-American Studies, Women’s Studies, Philosophy, etc.)
