WELCOME

Welcome back to all returning students, and a special welcome to our new students! The College of Education is a wonderful place to be—located just across from the main campus on some of the prettiest real estate at UK! We have a sprawling library on the second floor of Dickey Hall, student lounges and plenty of spaces to meet friends and study.  Make sure to read posters and signs hanging on the walls in Dickey Hall and Taylor Education Building so you stay informed of events, activities and opportunities. The development office is located right on the first floor of Dickey Hall—room 133—please stop by any time you have a question or need assistance. It’s never too early to think about establishing your giving history at UK. Here in the College of Education, we are so proud of our faculty, staff and students and we hope that all of you will, one day, join the thousands of friends and alumni who give to the College each year.

SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET HONORS RECIPIENTS

The annual Gary Stingle Scholarship and Award Banquet was held at the Griffin Gate Marriott on Tuesday, September 21st to honor all the College of Education award recipients for the coming year. More than 45 undergraduate and graduate students received scholarships, fellowships and other awards from the College. The evening also provided a way for the College and the recipients to thank our generous donors who have provided the opportunities for Education students to pursue their dreams of an education degree from UK through scholarship assistance. It is a wonderful evening each year to see those who provide the scholarships to have an opportunity to meet the young people who benefit from their generosity. Congratulations to all of this year’s recipients and many thanks to our donors for making it all possible.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION BOARD OF ADVOCATES

The Board of Advocates for the College of Education came together at their inaugural meeting in April, 2010 in Dickey Hall at UK. The Board will meet twice each year, once in April and once in October during Homecoming.

Board members will advise the dean and associate deans of the College of Education on educational and community issues that they feel the College needs to address through advocacy, or through teaching future educators in new ways. Because Board members are out and involved teaching, leading and working in the communities, they bring invaluable suggestions for new ways of addressing traditional issues.

Give it a try, and click often to support your College of Education!

Giving on a Budget
Many people saving wisely for retirement have stopped giving outright gifts. The UK Development Office for Estate and Gift Planning offers a gift plan that can do both: it's called a Deferred Gift Annuity.

  • It's a gift to UK that returns fixed payments to you for life
  • The payments begin at a future date that you determine
  • This deferral permits a higher payment rate than you could get with an immediate-payment gift annuity
  • The deferral also significantly increase your charitable deduction

The result? It's a gift plan that gives  you what you want when you need it -- an attractive tax deduction in high earning years and an assured source of additional income when you retire. If you don't need the income now, you can postpone your annuity program until you need them. The longer you defer payments, the higher the effective rate you will receive.

Ever Consider Establishing a Scholarship or Fellowship?
The College of Education awards almost fifty scholarships and fellowships each year to assist the best and brightest receive the quality education our faculty provides. More times than not, the students who receive the awards tell us that it wouldn't have otherwise been possible for them to attend UK without the aid they receive through the generosity of our scholarship and fellowship donors. Retired and current faculty have created scholarships and fellowships, as well as College of Education alumni who want to give back so that current students can share their experiences and go out into the world to change lives through teaching and leading in Education. We also have many scholarships and fellowships created to honor the memory of an individual who was associated with the College. If you would like to discuss establishing a new scholarship or fellowship, or adding to an existing one, please contact Valerie Sagan Overlan at 859-257-2479 or val.sagan.overlan@uky.edu
