College of Education Research Activity Award Fund Priorities for the 2009-2010 Academic Year From Deborah Slaton, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Studies
October 20, 2009
Each fiscal year, UK’s Executive Vice President for Research makes a Research Activity Award to each college dean. The College of Education award for FY 2010 is $38,963.
Research Activity Awards are a percentage of the facilities and administration costs (i.e., “indirects”) generated by grants awarded to College of Education faculty plus a supplement from the Vice President for Research. Awards are 2 years behind the present fiscal year, so this year’s award is based on FY 2008.
The College of Education Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies administers this award, and the following priorities will serve as the basis for honoring faculty members’ and graduate students’ requests for funds from the Research Activity Award. The following priorities are not in rank order, and exceptions are possible.
- Assistant professors in years after access to a start-up package or after a start-up package is depleted,
- Associate and full professors who have submitted one or more grant proposals or who have one or more active funded projects during FY 2007—FY 2008, and
- Graduate students involved in research based on Graduate School Guidelines published at: http://www.research.uky.edu/gs/fellowship/supportfunding.html.
- If the request includes some funds from another source such as the individual’s travel allocation from the Dean’s Office, departmental funds, or in the case of graduate students, Graduate School support funds, the request will receive favorable consideration.
- Travel requests to attend a professional conference, national or international should be for the purpose of presenting results of research; travel to present research at the AERA national meeting is a very strong priority.
- Partial matching funds for a proposal to UK’s internal grant programs administered by the Vice President for Research is available.
- Travel to a professional meeting to receive a national or international award for research-related activities will receive priority.
- Requests for funds to purchase research materials, equipment, or supplies will be considered in light of available funds and likelihood that the research will lead to future grant proposals.
- Requests to travel to a Kentucky professional conference are encouraged. Given UK’s land grant mission and our university and college goals to improve the lives of Kentuckians, proposals to present research in venues that serve our Commonwealth will receive high priority for funding.
Requests for research support should be sent electronically to Deborah Slaton (dslaton@uky.edu ) and must include the following information:
1. Identifying information: name, department; students, please identify your degree program.
2. Description of how the request fits the three areas of priorities listed above.
3. Specific dollar amount requested; this includes a total and a breakdown of expense items. The request should indicate other sources of funds committed to this request and clearly identify how much is requested from each source.
4. For conference travel include (a) complete name of conference, (b) an APA format citation of the presentation, (c) location of the conference, and (d) dates of the conference.
5. For research materials and other costs, a brief abstract describing the research project.
